In the later part of the 18th Century, a Ramshastri Prabhune was appointed as the ‘mukhya nyayadhish’ of the apex court of the Marathas. The Peshwa of the time, Raghunath Rao, was tried for murdering his nephew. Ramshastri Prabhune, held Raghunath Rao guilty of murder and sentenced him to death. This was testament of the Judicial Independence under the Marathas.
