As per the Constitution of India, police is a State List matter and thus the rules governing police officials vary from State to State. Due to this, the Badges/ Insignia of the Police officials also varies from State to State. While some States use the Commissioner system others are still using the traditional Directorate system.
Following is the Hierarchy and Insignia of the police officials in the traditional Directorate System:

3. | Inspector General of Police (IGP) | Crossed sword, baton, and one star | |
4. | Deputy inspector general of Police (DIG) | State emblem and three stars | |
5. | Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) | State emblem and two stars | |
6. | Superintendent of police (SP) | State emblem and one star | |
7. | Additional superintendent of police (ASP) | State emblem | |
8. | Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) | Three stars | |
9. | Inspector | Three stars and a ribbon ½” in width, half red and half blue, worn horizontally, red colour facing the stars | |
10. | Sub-inspector (SI) | Two stars and a ribbon ½” in width, half red and half blue, worn horizontally, red colour facing the stars | |
